A beautiful day in Carcross Yukon, as the community’s bright colours are covered with spiky frost.

This healthy-looking coyote was walking across Nares lake in Carcross. I lost sight of it  for a moment when I went to get my camera, then it popped up again close, looking at me with curiosity.

It takes on a special character when the frost hits the metal.

Yukon River starting to freeze

The river is starting to freeze. A few weeks from now, further downriver, the ice will support mushers in the Yukon Quest.

Getting the job done at -37c

This traffic light was flashing yellow one morning around 8am. Workers from the City of Whitehorse and a local electrical company were fixing it, with a little tent to cut the wind.

Yukon Arctic Ultra: 690km on foot

The Yukon Arctic Ultra follows the trail of the Yukon Quest from Whitehorse to Dawson.

This year 40 runners signed up for the journey of 690km in 13 days on foot!

Some people also use snow bikes or skis for shorter distances. What an event!

Today in Whitehorse Yukon Quest mushers launched their 1600km trek to Fairbanks, Alaska.

The race began with temperatures of -33c.

Cold snap in Whitehorse this morning!
