Caribou on the Alaska Highway

While driving towards Watson Lake this week I spotted two caribou, which seemed to be licking the road.

They waited a little while before moving into the brush.

Caribou have a spring migration and these days they are crossing the Alaska highway outside of Watson Lake and near Teslin Yukon.

It can be a real road hazard at night. A large sign can be seen on the road warning people about their presence.

Hesitant caribou

This shy caribou was spotted on the turnoff road to Carcross. Appropriately, the community’s name is a shortening of Caribou Crossing.
