Birds of Yukon: The red-necked Grebe

This type of duck is a red-necked grebe. (Podiceps Grisegena) It was spotted at the Pine Lake beach outside of Haines Junction.

This bird travels remarkable distances in its migration. The Peterson field guide says it can winter in North Africa.

In the third picture you can see the red colouring on the bird’s neck.
